Meet ALFAwetlands partner: Finnish Meteorological Institute

We are continuing introducing ALFAwetlands partners. One of them is Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). Tuula Alto, FMI team leader, has prepared this post, we are sharing with you.

About FMI

FMI is a research and service organization under the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Finland. Its main objectives are to provide the Finnish nation with the best possible information on past, current and future climate as well as the composition of the atmosphere and its effects on climate change and air quality, to ensure public safety relating to atmosphere-related hazards, to satisfy requirements for specialized meteorological products and to develop technologies related to remote sensing and new observation methods.

FMI´s role in ALFAwetlands project

FMI is involved in the ALFAwetlands Work Packages 3 and 4. Furthermore, in Work Package 3 FMI is responsible for a measuring GHGs in Living Lab sites in Finland (Lettosuo peatland forest and Rottasniitunsuo peatland forest, restored in 2024) by continuous eddy covariance ecosystem flux measurement method and collecting environmental data relevant for GHG assessments. In Work Package 4 FMI is modelling GHG balances and C sequestration in Living Labs by using ecosystem process models and  estimating the impacts of restoration on GHGs over a multidecadal timeframe on drained and rewetted organic and mineral forested and non-forested soils. Results will then be upscaled from site to region, applicable to the restoration or management solution at hand and compared and used to inform models in subsequent Work Package 4 tasks. In cooperation with other partners, FMI will examine GHG budgets in wetlands under different land use, restoration & management regimes.

FMI ALFAwetlands team

The FMI ALFAwetlands team is located in Helsinki, in Finland.

The team is led by Tuula Aalto, coordinating projects related to greenhouse gases in atmosphere and exchange with land ecosystems, modelling peatland forests and wetlands and functioning of ecosystems in relation to management actions and climate change.

Mika Aurela is a senior researcher coordinating and performing measurement data analysis on greenhouse gas exchange and the fieldwork in the Living Lab.

Sari Juutinen is a senior researcher conducting the fieldwork in the living lab and coordinating activities related to the monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions in wetlands.

Ville Tuominen is a researcher modelling greenhouse gas fluxes in wetlands by using ecosystem process models.

Happy to be part of this inspiring project on wetland restoration!
