Webinar Session 4 is part of the Wetlands in Action webinar series and presents the latest research results from four Horizon Europe wetlands research projects, with a dedicated focus on remote sensing.
Our presentations and experts are:
- Remote sensing-based monitoring of wetlands and their restoration, Parvez Rana, ALFAwetlands
- From Subsidence to Carbon Emission: A Fully Remote Sensing Framework for Quantifying Peatland Carbon Loss in Large-scale, Pouya Ghezelayagh, WET HORIZONS
Parvez Rana is a Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Institute Finland, Luke and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Eastern Finland. His work focuses on forestry, and peatland biodiversity and ecosystem services, using lidar, optical data, satellite, and drone data. He has more than a decade of experience in research and has authored over fifty peer reviewed publications. His works combine field observations, advanced geospatial analysis, and machine learning to improve understanding of forest and peatland ecosystem. He is also active in teaching and supervision and contributes to several international research networks.

Pouya Ghezelayagh is an environmental scientist at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, specializing in hydrology and remote sensing. His research focuses on peatland dynamics using satellite-based observations and geospatial datasets. He has developed a remote sensing framework for estimating carbon emissions from peatlands using subsidence as a proxy and is the lead author of several peer-reviewed publications on peatland ecosystem processes. Pouya’s work supports large-scale peatland assessments and contributes to evidence-based restoration and climate mitigation strategies.

Webinars´ background information
The Horizon Europe Sister Projects ALFAwetlands, RESTORE4Cs, REWET, and WET HORIZONS in collaboration with the Europe Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists are proud to conduct “Wetlands in Action”, a dynamic series of expert-led webinars showcasing the latest in wetland science, innovation, and cross-project collaboration.
Running from November 2025 to April 2026, this unique webinar series brings together leading voices in European wetland research for a deep dive into cutting-edge developments in conservation, data collection, stakeholder engagement, sustainable management, and policy. Each of the 45+ minute sessions will feature concise presentations followed by an open Q&A, creating a platform for meaningful exchange and networking among professionals across disciplines.
