Rewetting peat extraction area

Rewetting peat extraction area

Challenges: Restoring hydrology for re-establishing C accumulation.

Solutions: Former peat extraction area restored by rewetting. To minimise the risk of increased CH4 and N2O emissions, optimal WL is investigated using different experimental WLs.

Outcomes: Raising the WL eliminates the extreme risk of fire during drought and turns the site from GHGE to C sink due to slower peat mineralisation, but the total GHG flux will increase first, due to increased N2O and CH4 emissions, and begin to decrease only in the 2nd or 3rd year after restoration activities.
